mission

We’re a non-profit multi-media messaging campaign that encourages all of us to approach our interactions with others with empathy first. Through EFI we hope to help create a habit and culture of empathy and invite all to be a part of the larger empathy dialogue happening around the world. As we do so, together we will recognize each other as full human beings, improve the tone and quality of public discourse, and foster a deeper understanding of our collective life experiences.

FAR BETWEEN

With an intimacy never before seen, Far Between invites all of us to contemplate the question, “What is it like to be homosexual and Mormon?”. At its heart, BYU filmmaker and adjunct professor Kendall Wilcox boldly opens the door to his life as he optimistically engages – for the first time – with the expansive and often paradoxical space between his homosexuality and religion with the aim of engendering understanding and constructive dialogue. Kendall’s goal of personal wholeness and authenticity guides him as he seeks, finds, and shares the candid stories of real people representing the vast scope of realities and choices that make up the experience of being Mormon and homosexual. Throughout the film, Kendall’s own story unflinchingly exposes the viewer to the heartrending process of reconciliation while moving beyond the polemics that often dominate the discussion. With roots in the Empathy First Initiative, Far Between challenges viewers to “seek first to understand” and then join the conversation.

EFI DINNER GROUPS

We’ll provide all the tools and tips you’ll need to host your own Empathy First Dinner Group. What is an EF Dinner Group? It’s an evening of yummy food and conversation that helps build empathy for a segment of society different than your own. Together with friends, you’ll support one another in stepping just outside your comfort zone and learning about what it’s like to be someone else.

IEMPATHIZE

iEmpathize is an online film festival for high school students, sponsored by Empathy First Initiative to help curb the tide of bullying. The festival, coupled with in-school assemblies, helps students immerse themselves in the fundamental concepts of empathy through digital storytelling.
